Wärtsilä was one helluva industry corporation founded around 1830 in East Finland, but later operating all over the country. Their products covered several fields, from timber to train technology and from porcelain to paper machines. Later Wärtsilä specialised more and more in marine technology, and became one of the leading shipbuilders in the world. The giant tripped fatally on weakly counted re-arrangements of Finnish marine industry, and went scandalously bankrupt in 1989. From the ashes rose a new firm, which today continues the legacy of shipbuilding, but it's size is nothing compared to the greatness of late Wärtsilä.

Wärtsilä had many shipyards, but oldest of them was this one at the East banks of river Aura in Turku. It's history in shipbuilding goes all the way back to 1730's. Scotch-based firm Crichton, and later it's rival Vulcan, which were eventually both merged to Wärtsilä acquired the shipyards of river Aura in 19th century and developed them to a remarkable steam engine & ship producers. Both the Eastern and Western yards continued production at full capacity until late 1970's, when the Western one was moved to a better location in town, and the Eastern one was converted to a repair yard.

After these changes, repairing and (Diesel) engine manufacturing continued at the East banks until the beginning of 21st century. Then the actions moved - the repair yard to city of Naantali, and the engine factory to Italy. So the shipyard with history of almost 300 years was closed. Only a small service unit stayed at the area, for now.

As a personal note it must be mentioned, that this particular shipyard was the first industrial facility Violator ever paid special attention to. Being 2-3 years old, driving to center of Turku with dad he used to admire this huge complex building mighty ships. Young Violator named a sandbox, which he (being it's only frequent user) pretty much dominated, "Wärtsilä". And guess what was built at the sandbox? So, in addition to undoubtable industrial historic importance, this place holds an extra dose of personal importance.
