OTK match factory, Tampere

junkyard

The match factory of cooperative store OTK was built in 1925-26. Until the year 1969 it operated under the managament of OTK, then a newly formed group Finn-Match combining the matchstick activities of OTK, SOK and Kesko took over. Probably to rationalise this business field, Finn-Match closed the Tampere factory quite soon.

Later the area got a new questionable use when it was fillt with aging trucks. There has been a small car repair business in the factory's ground storey, other departments have been more or less unused. A local word on the street tells that the trucks at the yard would be stored for states of emergency, like war, when there would rise a sudden need for transportation vehicles. However, none of the rusty scrap trucks lying there today could even be driven away.

The highly architectural match factory looks nice still today, but it's been increasingly vandalised during past few years. It's a preserved estate, and the forthcoming renovation of Santalahti district should not endanger it's presence. Signs of a new coming can already be seen: recently the yard has been cleared remarkably, but there's still a lot of work to do.
