| Sawmill in Tervasaari, Hamina |
The first sawmill on island of Tervasaari, near the central of Hamina was finished in 1882. 65 years later it burned, but they rebuilt it with 2 frames. Sawing continued till 1987, then the mill was left empty. In 1994 Timo Kantonen wrote about the place in the yellow book.
In 2000, DM headed to Hamina in order to see this great abandonment in the region of many sawmills - too late. It had been demolished, and there was another timber producer at the area occupying new facilities. Defeated, we took some quick photos and left. But the new estates were abandoned much quicker than the former sawmill. The timber firm found a better place to operate, and in 2008 it was possible to see what wood industry, which has now left this island, left behind.
