Back To Tampella
6. The Power Plant pt. 2
colourline

Ofcourse decent workerman's overalls are our standard expedition gear, but here in Tampella they're a must. Not just because it's very dirty but also because of the spirit of Tampella, home of the harsh metal men of Tampere.
On the first floor up from the basement is this mess area that looks seriously like a supervision room.
Walkingh through the messy room takes to the main machinery hall, the boiler room. Only the boiler's missing.
The hall is big and it's got a huge empy space in the middle. Who knows why they ripped away the boiler? The place would be much better in daylight because the camera can't see a thing here.
A smaller machinery room at the side of the big hall is also empty. A note on the wall takes back in time a couple of decades, probably then the production of own power was stopped.
The big hall is quickly checked because it's empty so this is the next level up. A room where we found very nice souvenirs.
This floor's function is: a sauna, ofcourse.
One floor up again. Nothing here but a loft and steel stairs even upper. The view to the machinery hall would be kicking if it wasn't a night of the mounds and therefore pitch black inside.
Some ventilators and fans in the plant functioned, but this one doesn't.
Top floor is a big sooty concrete platform that goes above the hall. There are killing holes so better maglite your step before proceeding.
Note on the wall tells something I never thought of, this is a coal power station. No matter it spit out so much smoke. Workers must definitely use a safety belt here.
This is the coal bin and it shows.
>From the top there's only way to go which is back down.
The coal bin's funnel-alike bottom seen from the loft. The boiler's top must've been somewhere close to the spouts too.
This is on ground level, in the empty pit where somebody has dumped cars. Doesn't seem like an adequate reason to tear off the whole boiler just to get a few square meters for rental space but who knows.
Cables on the wall for all needs.
The control area is active, so they've isolated it from the rest of the plant by locking doors, shutting ways with boards etc. But there's quite an easy way in from the basement, just some climbing through this gap.
Zooming the fire alarm control panel.
We first thought this would be the closest we could get to the control area. It's shot through a window of a sealed door in the machiney hall.
It doesn't make sense to me that the big boiler is missing, but this generator hasn't gone anywhere. It probably has several kilometers of valuable copper wire in it.
A forever-thing in power stations, the nice tile figures of floor, also here!
There's enough instrumentation and panels.
The generator's other side.
20 ton hook lift is there, should've tried if was still connected and operatable. They're nice playing equipment when supervisors are not watching.
This corner is behind the sealed door we met first. Too bad it was so dark, the hall would be cool for a wide shoot.
