| The Sawmill of Strömma, Kimito (Kemiö) |
Strömma is in East Kemiö, archipelago Finland. Just before the border of Perniö there's a channel and tiny island called Holma. An small old sawmill lurks here, hidden out in the sticks far from urban mess and modern life. The place is unused, but taken care of and watched after. This information along with corrections to some details we got from a representative of the owner family. Thank you.
You can strongly sense history at the idyllic area. Despite the age, there are many buildings/constructions still left: rafting dock, other (boat) dock, garage, forklift garage, planer, sawmill and power station. The last mentioned has been emptied during the operational era due to moving to electricity as operating force. A shame, as with an operatable steamer this place would be about complete and superb. Even the logway by the seashore is standing. Weakly, but still.
Strömma wasn't a very big sawmill, but without a doubt a remarkable employer from a local point of view. Now that the sawmill has been shutdown ages ago and the viaduct requires no manwork the island is very quiet. Only a few houses are resided throughout the year. Slowly, the place is returning more and more to natural state.
