We searched for a thread reel factory in this area and found this place, accidentally. We first thought this was it, but there were some things that didn't match to the description given by the sawmill book: The chimney here is iron, not of bricks. Also the red building is wooden, not brick made. The place is called Iis Special Woods LTd, after the location (Iisvesi). Sounds like an international and remarkable wood processing site to me, but it's actually just a small timber yard and wood workshop.
Even though the firm is still operational, there's some old buildings in the area that are either partially or not at all used for wood business. There's a power station (?) building with the chimney, that we didn't inspect because of a house very near it. Then there's a timber drying house which is deserted, and a three storey wooden building, which has some working equipment on the ground floor, upper floors are unused. It was closed, but with minimal violence the old locking mechanism of a door was released and it was possible to enter.
The area has just one newer building, which is fully used. You could say this is really a 'special' place, old buildings and a detached house on the yard of a functional timber firm and no anykind of warning signs about trespassing industrial area.
Here's the road to the buildings. There's piles of various timber stuff everywhere, but it seems that they're really not very big producer.
The power station. We've no idea of what's inside, but what's the chimney for if not a boiler? If it hadn't been so close to a house with some people outside at their yard, we would've tried to enter.
Here's the mill that we first thought was the reel factory. It's ground floor is used by the firm, so it seems.
Same buildings, back side. The area has obviously been in timber use for atleast 100 years, and there's also a railway that leads to a nearby sawmill, Iisveden Metsä OY. It's also still operational, modern big sawmill. It's possible that the railway's also picked lumber from this mill back in the days.
"you're walking on the railroad tracks!.." Nice corner.
Power station filmed from the red mill.
Artistic attempt or something, this corner belongs to the deserted house with timber drier tunnels.
The same place, there's so much woods around you can't shoot from distance, so here's a circular end of the drying house.
Here's a drying tunnel. There's two of these.
"Sahaus alkoi 6 p:nä kesäk 1962 ja lopui seuraavana pävänä" - This very peculiar note about sawing, written on the wall of a drying tunnel, could tell something about the use of the building. Whoever wrote it wasn't very good in writing Finnish.
The red mill, ground floor. Here's some machines for wood processing.
First floor is different, looks very old. The spout in the center has taken something down from the second floor.
Second floor. You must not step everywhere, the floor is weak and it has some holes.
