| Sawmill of Skogby, Ekenäs (Tammisaari) |
At the eastern banks of Hankoniemi there's a small community created by a former steam sawmill. People still live in the idyllic worker's houses, but the sawmill of a remarkable production capacity was shutdown in 1987. The village is called Skogby and it's name and history are strongly related to the old ironworks some 10 kilometers west bearing the same name. In 1891, the sawmill built just three years earlier was sold to Fiskars, a company that also owned the ironworks back then.
The area is spacy and large straight by the sea. There are some quite big buildings still present at the area, but some sections have been lost. The residential zone is about half a kilometer north of the industrial buildings, so exploring at the place is easy and relaxed. In 2006 we heard that the sawmill had burned. Before this, it had been in weakening condition. The power station which survived was sealed. What will be its future? The huge drying department is reserved for boat storaging probably still today.
