First there was swamp. Then came the iron factories. Relics of some of the primogenitors of Finnish metal industry can be visited around the country still today, nearly 400 years later. Centers of the factories, manor house buildings, are usually preserved if they still exist, but heavily built charcoal ovens have often survived nearly without caretaking. These are the most typical remainings of old iron factories.
