| Hankkija Oy Raunistula feed mill, Turku (Åbo) |
Hankkija store was founded to serve farmers' needs in the beginning of 20th century. Later they diversified activities to several directions, but Hankkija was always above all a farmers' thing. Hankkija's own livestock feed production got a major boost, when the feed mill in Raunistula, a traditional working class suburb of Turku city was opened in 1959. The factory was big and continuously expanded, but after all it got to operate just a bit more than 30 years.
The 1992 bankcruptcy of Hankkija's successor company Novera reflected the state of country's economy. However, nothing could have saved the Raunistula mill, since it had been sold to a new owner shortly before the bankcruptcy, and the new owner had already decided to cease production in Turku. The massive grain silos were used for storing purposes for some years, but later also they became useless. What happened next is predictable - local vandals, who seem to be quite active, took the control. Results can be found at the site.
Today, not too long after last workers closed (and welded, and nailed) the doors of the mill, the place looks like it had just gone through WWII bombings. Traces of several arsons, loads of graffiti and smashed glass decorate this building, which as a matter fact is a preserved city relic. It's hard to understand why such a monumental and outstanding building has been left to so little guarding. It's "preserved", but what can a ruined place like this ever be used for? Restoring it to a decent state will cost..... a lot.
