| 1. Ruined factories |
We had no map, only name of the village as forehand info, but guess what lead us to the site?
Company's name has changed several times, but Rauhaniemi has been included in most of them. These ruins of the oldest factory part are over 150 years old, and they will be preserved. The smoke stack has been kept in shape with funding of the Finnish environmental administration (bureau).

Since there were construction (demolition..) works going on, the ruins were fenced and the fences had the guy-and-hand-signs to keep people outside. The fields around the factory grow raspberry. When we were at the area, some older man came to us and asked kindly for a permission to pick some raspberries from inside the fences, so he could make wine for the upcoming autumn.. We thought it was ok. =)

It is an admirably unique smokestack. This old factory has not had a roof for decades any more, and it has grown branchwoods still shortly before this photo was taken (which was in 2003). Fortunately the industry managers have realised the value of these estates and have not demolished them during factory expansions.

You may notice that there is no kiln around the stack at all. The continuous circular kiln was the first of it's type in Finland, and it was designed by the inventor of that kiln type himself, Berlin master builder Friedrich Hoffmann. Therefore it's really a shame that the kiln has disappeared.
No vegetation now, the ruins have been cleaned.
Bottom of the stack.
Kiln jaws.
There were some kiln tunnels at the Northern end of the ruins. I'm not sure if these belong to the original kiln or not.
Kiln somewhere.
Arced roof.
What are these?
Here have been the main brick production premises. But where have they gone?
Only one somehow complete building at the South side. It was full of junk. There was also a good conditioned building at the Northern side, but inside there was a man playing with metal and we didn't feel like disturbing.
All this yard has been brick factories and outdoor storages. Apparently not very long after shutdown.
This unreachable tower was a true odd bird. We couldn't figure out it's function, but later the aerial photo revealed that it's been embedded into the factory, which has actually been right here. Everything around reminding of factory interior has just been ripped away.
Perhaps the tower together with the smokestack will stay at the area, since it has already made it this far.
This brick house may also have avoided condemnation. It has contained some kind of washing rooms.
Old transformer booth is somewhere in the bushes.
Abandoned for atleast 25 years. Tag writing has changed since these times...
