| Raamattutalo Oy printing house, Pieksämäki |
Raamattutalo (bible house) is a printing house owned by a Finnish missionary society. They've printed the majority of finnish bibles (surprise?) and hymnals plus lots of other material. The printing facility was established in 1915 to Sortavala, but due to well-known facts it was forced to move during WWII. New place was found from Pieksämäki. The then-municipality sold the society a cheap plot from the middle of the town, and a new printing house with office space for the society finished there in 1949.
When the printing house moved to local industrial area (not known exactly when, possibly around 1990), the building commonly referred to as bible house was seized by the city. They used the premises for educational purposes, but also that use was forced to leave in mid-90's because the estates would have needed renovation. Economic depression had made sure the city didn't have any extra cash to use for such projects. The building was left empty.
In a different place, the house would've probably been smashed. But its extremely central location, next to the market place, a shop and railway station, and directly next to a taxi stop has gave the building a good protection against vandalism during 10 years it was unused. Finally in 2005, renovation works started. The house was fully renovated to a small scale technology center, in other words an office building.
