Runaway train

The railway between Pori and Haapamäki was built between 1929 and 1938. It was a good addition to the network especially for freight traffic, but as decades passed it started to become useless. New route sections, which served better the needs of traffic were finished later in 20th century. Nineteen eightyfour, the railway company VR decided to end traffic in the route section, excluding the line between Kankaanpää and Kihniö which has still freight traffic. Sections Pori-Kankaanpää and Aitoneva-Kihniö-Haapamäki, over a hundred kilometers of track, were closed from train traffic.

Closed from train traffic means that the rails are still present, and technically nothing prevents anybody from using the closed line for other purposes. Museum trains and basically anything that goes on tracks can use it freely, since there is no commercial traffic. Apparently supporting railway hobbyists and travel entrepreneurs has been the main reason for saving the tracks. However, considering how few such lines exist in Finland, the use seems very limited .

In search for some fading railway spirit, we've obtained one original VR draisine and renovated it. First drives were performed here, when we drove the 70 kilometer line Aitoneva-Kihniö-Haapamäki to both directions in July 2005. In good weather, equipped with adequate water reserve, traveling an unused railroad with this method is a great way to waste time. Especially if you happen to have general interest in railways. It's a perfect mixture of outdoor sports and adventuring, and legal.
