The Sawmill of Pomarkku
colourline

In a small town like Pomarkku (in western country, north of Pori) all industrial plants play an important role in bringing livelihood to people. Apparently the only sawmill in Pomarkku region was the Räfsö Ångsågs Aktiebolag, later Pomarkun liikeosakeyhtiö Yrjö Wiro ja kumpp. sawmill, functioning at it's current place since 1914. The sawmill, extended with carpenter works and a door and window factory was shutdown in 1980's. Since 1986, a house factory of Rosendahl Oy has continued wood processing at the same yards, but the old buildings related to sawing are totally unused.

This place is one of the best sawmills we've been to. Almost nothing has been sold away or removed from the quite aged plant. What's been removed has mostly just been thrown out to the yard. Perhaps due to presence of the operating factory, the premises are in surprisingly good condition after 20 defunct years. Vandals have not ruined the place, time has also been gentle. A special sight is the complete Sulzer steamer installation in the power station, a must see.
