Pitkälahti sawmill, Kuopio
colourline

Heikki Peura, an industry patron from Savo region built a sawmill to Southern Kuopio in 1911. It was his second sawmill after the first one built in 19th century to Suonenjoki. The sawmill was closed in 1971 when Peura's industrial operations were sold to Rauma-Repola.

The sawmill's buildings exist today almost entirely, but they have new users. Workshops, storing etc. keep the buildings occupied. Even if they were not used, there wouldn't be much to see today. Old sawmill feel has been cleared away almost completely. The external appearance of the mill is very fine, though, and it will doubtlessly continue to catch the eye of drivers approaching Kuopio from South for long to come.

dm-r4-kpopitka15 Our first encountering with the mill around the turn of the century. It looked lovely at a glance.
dm-2006-kuopitka6 The smoke stack has marked the place for a century, but recently the forces of the axis of evil have developed a new attraction next to the mill - a 24 hour extra super ABC service station, which now steals attention and the mill is no longer that dominant.
dm-2006-kuopitka5 In 1920's this power station powered, in addition to the sawmill, the entire city of Kuopio.
dm-2006-kuopitka2 Some of the production buildings are also of bricks. The main mill is wooden.
dm-2006-kuopitka3 No broken windows, it's in use.
dm-2006-kuopitka1 Fire alley isolated the power station from wooden sawmill. One day when stopping by the mill, this narrow area was isolated with police tapes - wonder what that was about. Either something criminal happened here, or it was some kind of practical joke.
dm-r4-kpopitka01 Fisheye view to the mill.
dm-2006-kuopitka4 Considering how long ago sawing ended, the logway is unbeliavably good conditioned.
dm-r4-kpopitka03 Once upon a time we had reserved a lot of precious spare time and driven a long way here, so finding a way into the mill was a must, with whatever efforts.
dm-r4-kpopitka04 It wasn't quite that simple, but what awaited in the mill was a double disappointment. An emptied space storing junk furniture.
dm-r4-kpopitka08 Yea, very interesting.
dm-r4-kpopitka05 It was once a sawmill, now just a hall.
dm-r4-kpopitka06 Three-wheelers.
dm-r4-kpopitka07 The meshes belonged to some kind of small business or handicraftsperson operating here. Fortunately no-one was around at the time of the visit.
dm-r4-kpopitka12 More from the business side.
dm-r4-kpopitka09 At least the blade sharpening shop didn't contain any junk, but not much else either.
dm-r4-kpopitka10 Blah..
dm-r4-kpopitka14 Hmm? Production of fences?
dm-r4-kpopitka13 What drives me..
