Nila and Chamos exploring

Paloheimo Oy, big company originated in Riihimäki, has for long been the city's most important industrial employer. Their main business is refining wood, but they've had diversified operations and they've been a strong brick maker in the 20th century.

The drain pipe and roof brick factory was moved to nearby of the company's sawmill, near the railway station in 1930 when the former factory in Santamäki burned. The factory suffered in 1940 WWII bombings and was rebuilt to burn again in 1962. In 1964, the last of the brick factories, the one that was later abandoned, started operating.

Roof bricks stayed in low-scale production until 1952, later it was all about drain pipes. Production ended in 1987. In 2006, news came that the place would be demolished. A new, awfully large shopping district "Atomi" was built partially over the drain pipe factory. During the 20 years of abandonment the factory served as graffiti wall, airsoft location and agility track to name a few uses. Still, it remained rather tidy looking from outside.
