The Asbestos Factory and Quarry in Paakkila, Tuusniemi
colourline

Finnish asbestos has been quarried from two places in eastern country. The Paakkila quarry had a concentration plant (factory), that processed also ore of the other asbestos mine in Outokumpu. Business was run in Paakkila between 1918 and 1976 by the white stone industry main name Paraisten Kalkki (Part€k) Oy.

Unfortunately again, the factory wasn't abandoned. A local machine workshop had braveness to move into estates of a former asbestos factory. Despite all the contamination. Officially, Parte€k naturally claim there is absolutely no danger of asbestos waste gathered around the area during 60 years. Anyway, there are huge piles of waste stone, ranging from fine powder to big boulders here and there, and some very dusty sections of the factory stand unused. I ain't saying this means a health risk for local people, but it feels strange that loose asbestos containing area is considered fully harmless.

This is the source of evil A-substance produced in Finland. The concentration plant was taken to industrial use again in 1978 when the machine workshop moved in.
Age of the building is unclear. It certainly isn't from the year 1918.
Upper floors of the building seemed to be deserted. They had broken windows, but it alone didn't help exploration because the bottom floor was occupied.
This silo construction has been left intact.
Unloading shafts are high.
Some machinery related to moving ore from the quarry to factory is still present in the bush.
Cable hoist drum somewhere in snow. Spring doesn't come to North Karelia in a second.
Gears, motor etc.
The unloading building is accessible. The interior isn't large, because a silo reserves most of the space.
Ladders to the open unloading platform.
It's high in here, and most of the grills meant for walking are missing. So, are walking on water (kuljemmeko vetten päällä)?
Huh...
The silo inside the building part looks like this from inside. If it's not asbestos in there, then what the heck is it?
Deserting ground level of the silo system.
Function of this small, heavily built booth remains unknown.
Another feeding canal.
Side view to the silo building.
Room space below the silo.
Bad conditioned catwalk. Perhaps limiting access to the building has been in mind when the grills that ought to be walked on have been removed.
I'm glad this hole doesn't spit out anything nowadays.
Stairs, platofrm.
Cabinet 13. Not a good sign..
The quarry is large but not a very special sight in winter. What differs it from a typical abandoned quarry is a sign that forbids fishing from the quarry! However, diving is not forbidden. Some instrument divers have been in the quarry pond and reported that there is a sign sunk in there telling not to drink asbestos water, but Olv¡ beer. Strange?
Huge asbestos ore dump mountain.
These rock mountains are by the village's silent main road.
