Olkkolan sahan jäämistöt

YPT/Yhtyneet PaperiTehtaat Oy, a company since digested by the mighty UPM-Kymmene group was mostly a paper producer, like it's name says. They did, however, run some timber business too. The only remarkable trade sawmill the company had built itself was the Olkkola mill employing some 100 people in Jämsä, in nearby of the Kaipola and Jämsänkoski paper mills.

Construction works were finished in 1946. After that, sawing continued until 1991 and the economic recession, which has facilitated many abandoned places in Finland being abandoned. A year later the decommissoned sawmill burnt down to the ground (ain't that strange!!). But the unit had been expanded remarkably during the years, although sawing was never considered a very remarkable business area to the owner company. The newer expansion parts of the sawmill complex can presently be found from the area, which will probably be converted to a dockyard. It may happen "soon" or then not.
