manor house overview

Nottbeck's are perhaps the most important family in the history of the city of Tampere. They bought a small cotton mill Finlayson in 1837, and developed it into the pioneering industrial plant of the country. They ruled the factory, and pretty much the whole city, for the next 70 years. Many historically valuable buildings remain in the city from their time.

The manor house entity developed by Nottbeck family is definitely the best kept secret of West Tampere. The manor house has several residential houses, some of them are unused. Abandoned, if you prefer. The farming buildings are nothing usual to find. They're gigantic, highly architectural monuments. Further South there's also a forgotten family cemetery - all this just an evening walk distance away from some of the biggest suburbs of the city.

In a big city like Tampere, how can it be that youngsters haven't vandalised the estates, or people don't go walking and admiring the strange creations? For the cemetery, reasons are 1: very little known, hard to find location. 2: nasty to enter. For the manor house: it's inside an operating, guarded forest industry area. Probably greatly because of these things, the buildings haven't practically been vandalised at all. Great finds, indeed.
