| MOK/Mikkelin Osuusmeijeri dairy, Mikkeli |
The cooperative dairy of Mikkeli region started operation in 1910. Production expanded slowly, so that in 1952 the dairy moved to new estates by the city's main street in Rokkala city district. Product line was wide. The dairy produced milk, buttermilk, cream, yoghurt and natural yoghurt, butter, cheese, ice cream and animal feeds. There were plans of developing the plant to a huge central dairy of whole Southeastern Finland, but things went differently. The biggest dairy of the area was closed for good in 1993. Perhaps economic recession moved the closing to an earlier time, but presumably nothing could have kept the unit alive in a longer run. Valio are executing an enormous rationalisation program, which has already closed the majority of provincial dairies.
After milk industry ceased, the estates were given over to the city of Mikkeli. They've rented out some departments, but most of the premises are unused. Because of the half-active status of the area, not too much vandalism has spoilt the buildings during the first 15 years after closing. Disrepair is seriously taking over though, and there's been talk about demolishing most of the buildings. Already now they are partially beyond the point where it would ever be feasable to repair them.
Living in a flat next to the dairy for a few years provided Violator a good chance to follow events here, and explore places whenever something interesting seemed to be going on (like opened windows, which were normally boarded in some time). During this time the dairy became one of the more interesting targets, because of its large size and amount of original details still found inside.
