SOK Savon Valssimylly mill, Mikkeli

Facade view

This mill is situated in the center of Mikkeli, a hundred meters East of the city's nerve center, the market place. Its six concrete silos are something you practically cannot avoid noticing when coming to the city. The mill is definitely the most important landmark here.

Original parts of the red brick mill were constructed in 1921 by a local timber producer. SOK store bought the mill in 1940, because they required more milling capacity and new location for their head office, which both had been lost in the war since they were located in Viipuri. The head office wasn't eventually established to Mikkeli, but milling continued and the building got concrete silos in 1969. Operation continued still for some years with feed production, but then the deprecated mill was shutdown and it was sold to the city of Mikkeli, which is the current holder.

Marking land has been the major function of the mill for the last decades. There was a small business arranging various activities at the mill still in the 21st century, but apparently the business never hit it big time. A competition held in 2007 to innovate new uses for the estate didn't generate any groundbreaking ideas. However, as the surrounding area of the mill is experiencing a renaissance, a solution to the mill question will certainly have to be figured out before long. Demolition is still one possibility, the other being conversion in some form.
