The neat sawmill view

People in Haukipudas region surely know the name Martinniemi. The sawmill had been a prior employer around since 1905, and doubtlessly the owner's decision to close it in 1987 was a major setback for the entire town. Haukipudas is in northern Finland, a bit north of Oulu, and jobs don't exactly grow in trees there. Rauma-Repola and namely it's forest industry division Repola Wood was again the name behind the decision to close this mill. Recently, some small-scale wood business has been revived at the area, but there's no returning to the times of greatness.

Since 1927, the Martinniemi wood industry complex covered not just a sawmill, but a pulp mill too. It along with a dedicated power station was built on Laitakari island, which was connected to mainland with a good road. It was a good way to utilise sawing waste, but naturally such a facility was way too small to cope in the world of modern forest industry.

All buildings in Martinniemi aren't totally unused. Some newer timber processing departments are occassionally used. The pulp mill houses some kind of workshop. But the original sawmill, perhaps the most interesting of all the buildings, is empty.
