| Korsnäs lead mine, Malax (Maalahti) |
Korsnäs lead mine on the swedish speaking West coast of our country operated between 1961-1973. Of this time, mining was halted for some two years due to collapsed price of lead concentrate. From the start, the lead deposit was known to be quite limited in size, and the developer Outokumpu Oy wanted to keep expenses minimal. Concentration plant was built of wood and it's machines were mostly old, from other former mines of the company.
After Korsnäs deposit had been dug away completely in 1972, the plant continued by concentrating lean nickel ore quarried from a nearby location Petolax (Petolahti) until 1973. Then the plant was shutdown forever. Nowadays small scale businesses have occupied some of the estates, but the concentration plant is unused. So would be the elevator tower, but it's inaccessible.
