factory & railroad

Savon Kalkkitehdas Oy was founded around the beginning of 20th century. The factory burnt dolomitic limestone of a nearby Ankele quarry and underground Montola mine. Paraisten Kalkkivuori (nowadays Part€k) bought the company in 1920's and scaled it's production highly up. During WWII the factory (and probably mines too) had war prisoners as labour. It was known as a sort of "paradise of work camps" because of relatively good treatment and working conditions of prisoners.

The factory isn't exactly abandoned. It's no longer owned ny Part€k, but Ankele quarry continues operation and the factory burns dolomitic limestone for farmers and industry processes as ever. However, some buildings are in secondary use, or practically not used at all. Therefore it's worth a quick check.
