| Rauma Repola Oy industrial building, Lahti |
The first industrial facility in Lahti was a sawmill established in 1869. The mill by the banks of lake Vesijärvi was expanded later with a pulp mill, glass factory and versatile wood further procession. One by one these operations were discontinued or moved elsewhere, and by the 1990's there was nothing operational at the area. It was also the time of economic recession, which delayed development of the area.
Last user of the estates was Rauma-Repola, who produced packet houses here still at the end of 1980's. Hence the area has often been referred to as the area of Rauma-Repola, although the history held many users and firms. After industry left, arsons, beating up visitors and other such activity continued for some 10 years before demolition took most buildings down. A few fragments were converted and a lot of new was built, and the area is nowadays known as the local high class residential zone Ankkuri.
The area has been a remarkable postindustrial target in 1990's, but we were seriously late in 1999 when visiting the place briefly - by night. Only one abandoned building was standing. Due to a misconclusion we thought the building had a relation to shipbuilding operations of Rauma-Repola, but that was not the case. This building has served either glass or wood procession industry and it was demolished around 2000.
