The steam house

Kymintehdas was the first of the three mills in Kuusankoski to start paper production. The year was 1872 and company name Kuusankoski Oy. Nearest competitor started soon at the other side of the river Kymi, but later they united as the famous Kymin Oy, Kymmene Oy etc. The eventful history led to today's situation, where the area of Kymintehdas is no longer in production use. This has vacated many buildings in the area.

All required electricity for the paper mill was produced with hydropower, so the boilers produced only process steam. A plant with 4 modern boilers was finished in 1935 to replace former small boilers of different factory units. This wasn't sufficient for very long, so a new boiler house, externally more a tower, was finished in 1955. The new boiler had one superior feature: it could burn sulphite waste liquor, which was almost ground-breaking back then.

After paper machines were rundown in Kymintehdas, the steam plant became useless. Apparently it hasn't been running since 1980's. They didn't hurry too much with further actions, since it wasn't until 2005 when they demolished a part of it. Fortunately, the older and bigger boiler house was saved, and only the "new" concrete tower was knocked down. Future is unknown.
