| Kyläsaari waste water treatment plant, Helsinki |
Kyläsaari in downtown Helsinki is an old place for sewage treatment. The first small plant was finished already in 1932. The later plant, capable of handling sewage of 300 000 citizens was finished in 1969 and sludge procession plant a decade later. All became useless after Viikki central waste water plant started operating in 1994. Unfortunately the huge square aeration basins have been demolished, but the place is still well worth a check.
The area is generally a bit vague. Adjacent to the WWTP stands a huge waste incineration plant, which was closed in 1988 as a result of public movement against burning waste and causing toxic pollution. It now houses a recycling center - without the massive smoke stack, which was imploded. Club house of one notorious M.C. is not far either.
