| Kuhmoisten Saha Oy, Kuhmoinen |
Some very good things come from the small municipality of Kuhmoinen, located at the Western banks of lake Päijänne. What it has to offer for building expeditions, well, atleast one steam sawmill in a highly original state. It is one of the neater ones still around and would be an excellent choice for the still-to-be-developed sawmill museum of Finland, now that a few former candidate places have burned.
The steam sawmill was built to the harbour of town in 1912 by a company naturally named Kuhmoisten Saha O/y. The facility has operated more or less actively till 1985 and technically nothing prevents somebody from starting the business again - financial realities may be another thing. It is quite unbelievable that the mill has stood there for 20 years now and it's changed so little from inside. For reference, Hiedan Saha converted from a sawmill to a ruin and from ruin to ashes during exactly the same time. Since 1998 we've hoped to see the place in full, and the goal was finally achieved seven years later. It turned out to not be a disappointment.
