| SMK/SOK roller mill, Järvenpää |
This mill may have been only medium size producer even at best times, but yet it's an important chapter in our food industry's history. First of all, it is claimed to be the first roller mill in Finland. Exactly speaking this means, that it was the first new constructed mill, that was equipped with rollers from the start, not the first in country to mill with rollers. Secondly, the grain silos are considered Finland's first slipform cast concrete structures. Recently the mill, unused for decades already, has locally been a subject of major controversy: what should be done with it? The mill is decayed in all typical ways, renovating would cost a big buck, but it's doubtlessly historic and local people like it. Future will show what happens.
About the past: the mill was built in 1918. Developers were private entrepreneurs and the firm Argos. About nothing remains from those times except the milling history and blind track, since the mill burned in 1944. A few years later it was rebuilt with the new concrete technique. SMK was the abbreviation of new owner firm, until giant SOK bought the plant and continued milling until 1971. After ceasing milling, the silos have been in storage use until 1990's. Presently only the bottom floor is used constantly - as a workshop for certain hobbyists. Rest of the premises have practically no use.
