Back To Iron

The iron product factory complex at the banks of Aura river in central city area of Turku is not really a "ruukki", it's a modern production facility from steam era. However, we feel that as an iron factory the place suits for the "Ruukki" company well.

The factory is famous. They used to produce railway and tram carriages, locomotives, safes and other heavy products. Oldest existing buildings at the place age back to 1914, perhaps even further. The plant has operated at the place since 1850's. As we checked the complex in summer 2002, we were a little bit late. Operations to fix and renovate the estates for the swedish university Åbo Akademi had progressed so that there was not much to see inside the buildings. They also worked on the renovation although it was saturday.

One of the neatest details of the rectangularly built industrial block is the southwestern corner and it's tower. It would also look much better without all construction ware and trash in front.
Many windows were still boarded, despite that there were walk-in entrances everywhere. The estates have probably been empty for some years before renovation. Should have come earlier...
It was a bit confusing that the lights were lit on a saturday morning.
Doors of the department for incoming material.
Very nice building wich we didn't check because somebody worked at the yard behind it.
Department alley between the two previous.
Courtyard walls of another building. The narrow alley between this and the neighbor building had been dug to a V-shaped ditch.
Something similar to above.
A chimney here, so probably a heating station.
Inside the 1915-tower.
Inside the big eastern hall. Inside renovation is yet to be done here.
The two storeys have the same aerospace, the upper one is only partial and middle section of it is missing.
Very dramatic looking wall which is not cleaned up yet.
Isolation styroxes were stored here.
This doorway is also still untouched, but there are markings sprayed by the renovation workers.
We didn't go further, because the voice of working equipment came from this direction and even saw somebody with helmet in just some fifty meters distance.
Off-Topic: From the yard you could also see this elevator-mill combination somewhere not so near. We would want to know what is it's situation of life. TBD...
