House of Ipnos, Turku
colourline

The so called house of Ipnos in downtown of Turku was a multifunctioned and historic place. The story starts in 1912, when a bread factory Leipätehdas Ipnos Oy started operating at this address. In 1941, the old buildings gave way to a new office building of the owner company. Until 1952 the factory continued to grow and produce bread and biscuits. The growth meant they had to build several extension wings and modify existing buildings. This has made the block very disordered and labyrinthine.

The Ipnos factory became a part of the story of Huhtamäki group, the world class food package provider named after the establisher, industry wonderman Heikki Huhtamäki. The company owned the Ipnos bread factory for some 30 years. After bakery industry left the area, it was taken over by the Finnish defence forces. The Turku coast artillery regiment and a department of the defence ministry moved in and stayed for 30 years. The former factory became a garrison in central city.

The fall began in 1982, when the city of Turku seized the buildings but only used them for storing worthless items. Slowly, the unguarded and unused estates were taken over by different groups from Turku underground. The unique and historic, but ruined, building suffered some small fires, but the terminal fire raged there on December the 16th, 2003. After this the buildings were torn down, which doubtlessly appealed to many city officials.
