| Holm's Suction Gas Motor Sawmill, Padasjoki |
So far our longest search was finished in 2003 when we found this small but splendid sawmill from Padasjoki. It took almost 5 years from the first attempt to find it. The buildings are no farther but some 50 meters from the bypassing road, but branchwoods conceal these small camourflaged buildings very effectively. Also, the (otherwise so great) information source told wrong information about distances.
Anders Holm had some industry by Arrakoski rapids in the beginning of last century and he expanded business to a nearby strand plot in 1939 by developing this sawmill. It was war time and fuels were hard to get and expensive, but the small sawmill was still designed to be powered by a combustion engine - a suction gas motor, which would only require some wood to burn. Sawing continued until 1970's. It seems like the plant has been totally forgotten since. Apart from local youth, no-one has used the sawmill for anything since shutdown. Almost nothing has been removed, but nothing's been fixed either and years are starting to eat the buildings. The suction gas motor installation is still almost fully present, and can be counted as a rarity.
