| Huutokoski (Hko) train station, Joroinen |
The village of Huutokoski is nowadays so silent, that it's hard to imagine the place was once a vivid railway junction. The station was built accordingly big. Today, trains only bypass the station and since late 2003 the station has also been "cold", when train dispatching was taken to remote control from nearby city Pieksämäki. Arrival of remote control meant replacing the mechanical interlocking device with electronic equivalent, and also decommissioning Finland's last operating semaphore. Especially because of this historic step Huutokoski has been documented quite well on Finnish railway hobbyists' pages.
The station area must be one of the finest railway milieus you can find from Finland. It is just enough decayed to have the historic mood, but not terminally vandalized or rotten. It is great place to check out, even if you didn't go inside any places or walk illegally on the tracks.
