Karhusaari railway bridges, Kotka
colourline

The island of Halla used to be all about wood procession industry. In nearby cape Sunila there's still a pulp mill. These facilities - among a few others - needed railway transportation, which was arranged with a private railway that was connected to state's network at Kymi hub a bit North. Time of construction was at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries.

Halla is an island at the southern end of the original line. A couple of bridges were needed to carry the trains over water. Today, when the connection from Sunila to Halla is unused, the railway bridges don't officially serve any kind of traffic. Rest of the short railway (Kymi-Sunila) is owned and operated by the country's only private railway company.

dm-r5-ktahalla1 This bridge connects the island of Halla to a nearly unexistent island Karhusaari.
dm-r5-ktahalla2 A nice sight it is still today.
dm-r5-ktahalla3 There are holes in the ground, as if we were in the Middle East.
dm-ko_sillat4 The bridge as seen from Sunila. The red brick part is a pumping station.
dm-ko_sillat7 The tracks haven't been removed, nice!
dm-ko_sillat6 There's actually even a signal (to Kymi direction) still present. It's suffered a bit, but still.
dm-ko_sillat1 Hmm, is than an element of the bridge or does it just look like one?
dm-ko_sillat5 Here Karhusaari connects to a former island, now mainland with this shorter bridge.
dm-ko_sillat3 Industrial area of Sunila starts right behind the bridge, although it might not look like that right here.
dm-ko_sillat2 Basic construction of this bridge is identical to the longer one.
