F0rtum Oyj Sköldvik oil refinery's residential area, Porvoo (Borgå)
colourline

View to the refining plant

The Finnish state energy company's main oil refinery on South coast is being expanded. Because the expansion needs space they had to tear down several, but not all, company appartment houses built in the 1970's. This was performed in October 2003. The residents had left a bit earlier.

The residential zone is inside industrial area but there are no controlled gates if you go to the houses. Surprisingly, there was no clay coat patrolling either, so nobody interrupted checking the half demolished houses. A bland reek of oil hanging in the air and constant humming from the distance created atmosphere. In dark hours the lit refinery area itself with outnumbered pipes and stacks is a killer sight.
