| The Sawmill Of Fagervik, Inkoo |
This sawmill in Inkoo, south coast of Finland is at the Fagervik's iron factory museum area. It's preserved and protected by law, so without a doubt this is a place that won't go down soon. Some might say exploring a place that's actually a museum can't be very exciting, but it's still an old sawmill and normally closed from public, so why not to include it here.
There's also a millhouse adjacent to the sawmill. They've both been operated with hydropower provided by the rapids flowing next to the buildings. Quite surprisingly, the sawmill from 19th century has been used for low volume sawing till late as beginning of 1990's. For the last years, electric motor was used as an power source instead of water turbine, but otherwise the place is in original shape. The machines, buildings, surrounding yards.. Everything is almost exactly as it was in the end of 19th century. The area has been renovated well, without making it look too new and sterile.
We found this place because once again it is invented in the great book, NBA's sawmill bible. The Raphael - Iron and man EU-project web page has also included pictures from the Fagervik area. Too bad the site is typically to such projects full of official nonsense and it's very hard to navigate (you have to click "partners" to get to gallery page!!?). Even worse, the server forwards straight links pointing to the subpages back to the front page. Anyway, it's worth a check, and so is the mpeg cut we took inside the sawmill (link #3), "the spinning sawing machines"!
