| Åvensor (Ahvensaari) limestone quarry, Korpo (Korppoo) |
Limestone of Åvensor has been utilised already atleast 150 years ago. Low-scale quarrying and burning was performed on the island by private entrepreneurs until 1935, when Paraisten Kalkkivuori acquired the production facilities. In practise, those were the quarry and one shaft-oven, plus some older cylindrical ovens. They continued production until 1938, and later between 1944-1956. Then the small limestone factory employing some tens of men was closed. Since nothing was demolished then, relics of limestone industry have stood on this remote archipelago island up to our days.
Because of the fact that the island is out on the sea, far from Terra Firma, you have to use a boat to get there. Preferably something bigger than a rowboat, in case it gets stormy. Threfore, after first hearing about this place, it took 3 three years for us to arrange a trip here. But the place is worth seeing. It's not HC in terms of strict UE action, but intriguing as hell. The island is very beautiful, like it can only be in the archipelago. The sea element and isolation add their extra coolness to the already cool environment with quite well survived industrial ruins.
