| Metsämonttu zinc mine, Kisko |
The last 300 years of Kisko's history hold lots of mining activity. There have been several metal deposits out of which just a few were really profitable for mining. Nowadays there are no active mines in Kisko.
In 1946, ore explorers of the nearby, recently re-opened Aijala mine owned by Suomen Malmi Oy found this zinc deposit in the woods. The place was appropriately named as the "forest pit". It was mined for a few years by SMOY and then by Out¤kumpu Oy for some 20 years. The place has been abandoned totally.
Also check ref #1, the GSF page contains a couple of old photos of the mine constructions and all the geological info you could ever want to know.
